Our Environmental Statement

At Billow & Breeze, our business is inspired by the sea, shoreline and natural beauty of south west Scotland. Based in Stranraer, on the banks of Loch Ryan in the Rhins of Galloway, we are surrounded by a landscape that constantly reminds us how important it is to protect and respect the natural environment.

Sustainability is at the heart of what we do. Many of our handmade pieces are created using ethically recycled shells, including Loch Ryan oyster shells, west coast rock oysters and Solway Coast scallop shells. Rather than allowing these beautiful natural materials to go to waste, we clean, prepare and transform them by hand into unique shell gifts, trinket dishes, jewellery, candles, decorations and keepsakes.

Each shell has its own natural shape, texture and character, and we believe there is something very special about giving these materials a second life. Our aim is to create thoughtful gifts that celebrate the coast while encouraging a more mindful approach to buying, reusing and valuing natural resources.

We make considered choices wherever possible, using non-toxic sealants and UV resin in our shell work, choosing eco-conscious materials where we can, reducing unnecessary waste, and reusing or recycling packaging wherever practical. We also carefully select products from other makers and suppliers who reflect our values around quality, sustainability, ethical sourcing and thoughtful design.

As a small family business, we know that sustainability is an ongoing journey. We are always looking for ways to improve how we work, reduce our environmental impact and make better choices for our customers, our community and the coastline that inspires us.

We are proud supporters of the Galloway and Southern Ayrshire Biosphere, part of the global UNESCO Biosphere network, and we are also applying for the Biosphere Certification Mark. This reflects our commitment to supporting local people, protecting nature, celebrating cultural heritage, and promoting responsible, sustainable business in this special part of Scotland.

Through our shop, website and social media, we hope to share more about the places, materials and stories behind our products — from Loch Ryan’s oyster heritage to the beaches, shells, wildlife and makers that help shape our work.

Billow & Breeze is built on creativity, care and respect for the coast. Our hope is that every product we make or choose brings a little joy to our customers while honouring the natural environment that inspires it.
